JOBS IN CANBERRA

Good Morning

Greetings from Canberra.

I have two new jobs on the website:  Surveyors/Senior Surveyors and Motor Mechanics.  If you have clients who are really well qualified and (preferably) about to be granted independent skilled visas, then please discuss these opportunities with them.  My clients may consider sensational candidates who need employer sponsorship.  I’m still on the look-out for road engineers, really high level construction project managers and sonographers.

Surveyors are required by a well-respected local land surveying practice established for over thirty years.  In this time they have been involved in some significant national projects.  The work is varied and covers commercial, rural and residential.  Succession planning is important and a Surveyor with around 10+ years’ experience and professional registration may be offered an equity position.

Motor mechanics are in short supply in Canberra.  My client is seeking trade qualified Automotive Technicians with 5+ years’ experience.  Certification by Peugeot or Hyundai would be looked at very favourably.

Employers are reluctant to commit to the 457 visa.  There has been some negative press about the employment of 457 visa holders in one or two local restaurants and now everyone is very wary.  Of course the RSMS is a good way to go; but most employers are unaware of this option.

Global economic factors are starting to kick in – even in Canberra.  Petrol and food are both on the way up; but the job market remains very buoyant

I meet employers every day who despair at finding good staff.  They are not so desperate to take “just anybody” and remain very specific about their requirements.  They are coping currently with overtime, restricting leave, cutting opening hours and declining some work when they can do so.  The new Australian Government has shed around one thousand workers in the last few months, but these workers have been quickly absorbed.

Last week I welcomed to Canberra two new arrivals with PR status:  an accountant with four years’ experience in public practice and an ICT developer and tester with an excellent work history over ten years with some high profile companies.   There is good interest in both candidates and I expect them both to be employed within the next fortnight.  It is interesting to note that in both cases their salary expectations were much lower than the usual rate for people with their experience.  We have been able to advise them on the most appropriate salary range for their qualifications and experience.  They are delighted!
